Neverwinter, one of the largest and most important cities in Faerun, as all large cities do, had been expanding outward, displacing a lot of the native inhabitants. A group of Wood Elfs infiltrated, in order to force Neverwinter to quit their expansion through acts of… aggression.
Two, a couple, the wife with child, settled in in a poorer part of town. Not wanting to get caught until their child was born, waited to act and settled in for the long haul. After the child was born, they began to set a series of fires, thinking they had the perfect cover.
But they were caught on their third attempt. They were both executed, and the child was dumped into an orphanage.
6 years later, as tensions increased, the child, named Aramel, and not given a last name, was sent out to the streets. He was picked up and essentially adopted into the thieves guild, doing jobs around the hideout, and began training as a thief in his late teens. He felt a lot of guilt robbing people, but noticed that the rich held onto their wealth, while the poor, like himself, were starving in the street. He watched them abuse the less fortunate, and it made him angry. He became a very zealous thief in a short period of time, eventually going too far, and being run out of town. He met a contact from the guild outside of Neverwinter, who advised him to stay out of town for the time being, as not only were the guild under scrutiny, but racial tensions were also on the rise.
Aramel found a group of elves in the woods near the city, who took him in. They wanted no part in the feud between the races, and said they felt the presence of a greater enemy on the horizon. He began training with them as a ranger, and they spent a great deal of time hunting aberrations, in particular.
He was captured in the Underdark when his unit was wiped out by the Ilithids they were hunting. Aramel fled and was captured by Drow.
